Yes, barcoding is possible in the Lotus Notes client. My Missouri government customer was originally using some IBM system to do bar coding, but decided to switch to a Lotus Notes barcoding solution since it was cheaper and more flexible.
I originally started testing a Windows bar code font offered by a vendor. The barcode displayed fine in Lotus Notes views and when printing.
However, the Notes application needed to mail merge the barcodes to Word which started to get complicated. Eventually, we decided to just purchase a 3rd party add-on tool called Print Merge Reporter which supports mail merging barcodes using the same Windows font package anyway. :) As of today it is running fine on Windows 7 with Notes 8.5 and Word 2010/2007. It was previously running on Notes 7/6.5 on Windows XP. We originally started this project on Notes 6.5, so thankfully all upgrades to Notes, Word and Windows went smoothly with a few minor tweaks in Word 2010/2007 security settings which is documented in the 3rd party on-line help.
